Post Focus 1.6 Zetec (2004 model) losing water

Hi folks, new to this forum and looking for some technical help with the above model.
The car is losing water from the cooling system and despite careful examination of the engine bay I can't see any evidence of a leak. Yesterday I noticed that there is a small spigot directly underneath the point where the heater hoses go into the bulkhead and water was dripping/dribbling from this pipe (NOT from the heater hoses). When I put the heater and/or the fan on the drip/dribble got worse, then appeared to stop. This is the only place I can see the remotest evidence of a leak. The rate of the leak is approx max line to min line (on the header tank) in about 200 miles of mostly mway driving.
A strange side effect is that the radiator cooling fan comes on at odd times, eg when the engine is not even warm, switches off, may come back on again and even seems to come on when the heater fan is switched on !
Anyone got any experience of this type of problem or can point me in the right direction ? I thought at first that the heater matrix might be leaking, but theres no sign of water inside the car, or wet/damp carpets or floors.
I'm a bit baffled and really need some expert advice ! Many thanks.
